IBS
named a Microsoft Small Business Specialist
New designation distinguishes IBS as an expert
in small-business solutions and services
In early March, IBS became the first Microsoft partner in
the region to achieve Small Business Specialist
status. To attain this new designation, IBS has demonstrated
expertise in planning and building solutions for small
businesses utilizing Microsoft Windows 2003 Small Business
Server, as well as other products geared toward the
75-and-under user market.
This included having to pass Microsoft’s Small Business
Sales and Marketing Skills Assessment, designed to test the
company’s knowledge of the dynamics and dependencies of the
small-business market, as well as a technical certification exam that
measures the ability to design and implement solutions for
the small and medium-sized business by using Windows Small
Business Server 2003 and the Windows Server System™.
The Small Business Specialist Community was developed by
Microsoft in response to input from small-business customers
who needed to quickly
and easily identify the technology partners best suited to
support them.
Having proven expertise in delivering high-value, strategic
solutions for small businesses, our newly-attained status
provides us with early line of sight to new products,
services and programs from Microsoft, which can extend the
value we bring to our client relationships.

Tech Review - Helping the Northampton
Chamber grow
|
|
Proper planning
allows your network to grow with your business!
In
2002, the Northampton Chamber of Commerce embarked on a plan
to upgrade their network from a server running an older
version of the Novell Netware operating system to a
Microsoft Windows environment, as well as replace their
older PCs with new. IBS listened carefully to their needs
and proposed a solution that would meet their needs of today
and tomorrow; while staying within their budget. This
solution included a 2000 Microsoft Small Business Server and
new Windows XP Professional workstations.
After agreeing to the project proposed, IBS sent 2
technicians to migrate data from their member management
software to the new server and tackle other tasks required
with such an upgrade. When the day was done, all of the
chamber’s staff had new workstations, and the new server was
implemented featuring a new backup solution including
Veritas’ Backup Exec and a new tape drive.
While the Chamber doesn’t host their own mail, they still
enjoy the benefits of the features of Exchange, like shared
calendars, contacts, and the backup of their mail as part of
their nightly backup. Since the time of this project, the
Chamber has upgraded their membership management software
and IBS was there to work with that vendor to be sure that
their data was migrated properly and tested the application
with them before it went “live”.
Support from IBS has been lead
by Sean Benoit, one-fifth of the ownership group and a key
contact for many of our small business clients. Sean
notes, “When we embarked on this project in 2002, we
proposed a solution that would meet their needs for growth
and expandability in the future, to change as their needs
continue to change”. This is just one example of how
IBS looks to maintain their client’s environment today and
in the future.

"Sean, in particular, is like a member of Chamber staff family.
We so appreciate that he's not only good at what he does but
that he also takes the time to understand what we do and how
computer technology plays a role in it. He helps us figure out
the best ways to do things and always makes us feel like the
most important client IBS has. He's been here until way past
dinner just making sure we have everything we need to be up and
operating. He also makes us laugh".

"Your entire staff is the most customer service
oriented group of computer people I've ever known. You guys talk
to us in a language you can understand. You solve problems. You
watch our bottom line. You take care of things" - Kristin Cole,
Manager of Operations Greater Northampton
Chamber of Commerce

IBS
helps CAFS with software to increase efficiencies
|
|
Located in Northampton, Children’s Aid and Family
Service of Hampshire County is a small, caring,
non-profit, social service agency supported by friends,
the United Way of Hampshire County, and the
Massachusetts Department of Social Services and The
Children's Trust Fund. Their services range from (but
are not limited to) parent support, Healthy
Families - a statewide home visiting
program for first-time teen parents, and adoption
support services.
IBS has been
actively working with CAFS in the support of their computing
environment since 1998. As part of a technology review,
redundancies in paperwork and information generated between their
various departments was noted. IBS then approached Executive
Director Jeff Roth-Howe about helping them automate certain tasks by
developing a software application to aid in tracking clients and
client contact hours.
|
The goal was to
replace a system which used paper forms to record client intakes and
service contacts. These forms were being typed into a Microsoft
Access database, but there was a data entry backlog and it was
difficult to retrieve information.
First, the
client intake form was replicated as a database of cases and people
served. We started with a record for each person, which could then
be grouped into Cases that might include several members of a
family. Thus, a particular client could be served more than once in
different capacities or as a member of different family groupings
without having to duplicate their record.
The social
workers and other service providers log into the system and fill out
a daily log of their client contact time (direct and indirect) as
well as non-client and personal time. The daily logs automatically
collect into monthly time sheets which summarize hours by month,
week and day.
When a
supervisor logs in, they can enter their own time as well as view
the time sheets of the social workers they supervise. Supervisors
are also responsible for approving monthly time sheets.
The application
is equipped with drill-down capability so that activities can be
viewed from any perspective. For example, a client look-up will
yield all the cases they are part of and provide information
regarding the corresponding social worker. Look up a social worker
and you can see which clients and cases they worked with and what
time they logged on any day.
